2018 Brier Announcers

Since major changes are coming to Brier format next year(uuuggghh) I have this "announcer" thing buzzing in my head. And no disrespect to the current crew .So here is my brain wave.
Every Curling Club I've ever been around has a group of seniors "the hot stove league" If you will ,announcing or commenting on games behind the glass....SO have clubs from across Canada submit their finest and bring in four of the best to announce ONE Brier game next year....maybe Team Canada vs one of the newbies in the field....The rules would be simple.

1.Must have curled at least 50 years to qualify
2.Must be at least 70 years old.
3.Must have the gift of the gab or motor mouth

Now I know you all have someone in mind already so what do you all think?
I for one would pay to listen to some of these old veterans of the game...think it would be a hoot. Or do I just have too much time on my hands lol.

Donald Trump is my first choice ..

Randy Ferbey with an open bar my second ..

Vic , Russ, and Linda my 3rd

ill be the camera man for an hour - no 10 second faceshots , no rock moving in white with no lines , guards, or house in sight

lots of house shots after a shot so we can see what happened or what is next ...

what a rip off - no tie breakers - those top 4 teams only think of themselves

A 'hot stove league' of old club curlers announcing a game is a good idea and would surely be enjoyable. That said, I don't think TSN would be open to the idea.

The next best thing - which TSN might actually be open to - would be to have 4 retired elite level curlers from roughly the same era announce a game. It would be fun to hear, for example, Jeff Stoughton, Ed Werenich, Jim Ursel, and Rick Folk telling tales from the past and disagreeing with each other about the strategy in the game they're announcing.

I hope Russ never quits. Vic too.

I've listened to many broadcasts without Vic Rauter involved, and none of them are that good. I almost turned off the morning games this year because I could barely take Brian's version of Vic's "just learning the game" routine. Cathy knows her stuff, but for some reason it just doesn't work with those two.

I agree with most of your comments, but could totally do without Cathy. She babbles on incessantly.
Personally, I would love one TSN channel with no announcers, only the players and their benches miked, especially in the morning games.

im in the vast minority but i dont mind cathy. give her a little leeway and consider who she's working with.

mudryk is being groomed to take over for vic, there's no secret about that. just imagine what an eventual mudryk/howard/bernard trio is gonna be like.

i really miss linda and ray. now that was great commentary duo. even vic was more tolerable with those 2

Hopefully they change their minds because I won't be watching if that's the case.

The main problem I see with Brian/Cathy is that it seems as if they are reading from a really boring script. It doesn't seem natural or interesting in any way. It can't be that hard to find broadcasters who speak in a conversational tone without sounding so contrived.

Cathy sounds like a grade 8 Math teacher explaining fractions to a class of bored students. Mudryk is the teacher's pet and the only one who can stand her.

I shudder at the fact that Mudryk is being groomed to take over for Vic. I've grown weary of Vic's lack of knowledge and inane psychobable about how teammates interact, but he is 1000 times better than Brian.

Brian seems like a nice guy and I'm sure all of the 80 year old grandmothers just love him. I prefer my announcers to have personality and a bit of an edge. That's the only complaint I have about Russ. He's way too positive and agreeable. I want to know what he really thinks about some of the boneheaded strategy at the Scotties.

Vic is 61 and Russ just turned 61 so hopefully they'll be around for another 10 years. I think Ray Turnbull was around 70 when he retired.

Cheryl is 50, so she'll be around for a while if she wants to. I don't think she's as good as Linda, but she's improved a lot since she started.

Hopefully someone like Jennifer Jones or another retiring skip takes over for Cathy soon, though someone like that might not like playing second fiddle to Cheryl. Cathy is 55 and Bryan is only 37.

Surely TSN can do better than him. I wouldn't even mind having two former curlers do the morning draws together. Something like Richard Hart and Jennifer Jones. It would be more about strategy for the more knowledgeable hard core viewers.

Jennifer Jones would be a great choice - as she's coming to the end of her amazing journey soon.

Even though I don't like Chelsea Carey's on-ice persona she did a solid job doing color for Sportsnet at the Manitoba Scotties. Very good actually!

Cheryl Bernard has finally found her calling - and is the most improved announcer TSN trots out. Without question. Still a tad behind Linda but pretty darn close. She's learned to assert herself - before she always deferred to Russ or Victor.

Jones could be incredible - her cadence is a bit clipped but that's more her trying to be on message for fans and media - ie. never trying to say anything controversial. As a color girl she'd be superb cuz she sees all the possibilities.

Jill Officer, some will remember was a trained news announcer who performed TV duties in Brandon & Winnipeg. She's got a very good on-air demeanour and would be a good add if Jennifer can't go or Cathy was reduced to sideline duties and interviews.

Even Kaitlyn Lawes now has the confidence to announce. However, she's only 28 and still has many years of chasing Scotties, Worlds & another Olympic title.

BC has a lady who does a nice job with their provincial playdowns - in fact, given the poor level of play she's more the hi-lite than the curling. There was also an Ontario lady who worked part-time for TSN when Cheryl wasn't available. Anyone remember her name? Wasn't that old either - perhaps 32 to 35.

Agree. While I thought Chelsea did a very good job behind the mic, I think Jill would be outstanding. One thing is very true -- it's not as easy as it looks.

The " B.C. Lady" is a former world champion and a former Olympic bronze medalist. You would think that a poster with such a wide array of knowledge of the sport would know that.

I must be the only one to enjoy ALL of curling. The game, the broadcasters....or I am the only one we get to see as much as we do. We rarely saw any years ago. The broadcasters are not on the ice, tune them out, or better yet, hit your mute button.

Love TSN and all their broadcasts!

Nobody is every happy, always have to complain.....

I am expressing my views of all the great games we get to see, that everyone else is complaining about. Certainly better than years ago when all we saw were finals on CBC! Sporstnet now showing grand Slams - all is great! Turn down or mute your tv. Those commentators obviously do a lot of work behind the scenes with their knowledge of little stories, I for one like hearing - don't really care who is telling it.

Complain all you want - none if could be televised, then what would you have to post about - duh!

Personally I think the TSN crew does a terrific job. Not to far above the heads of casual curlers or spectators, and with plenty of food for thought for more experienced viewers.

If you've ever been behind the mic to broadcast curling, even just an aspiring webstream, you realize how difficult it is to put on a professional sounding show. They are models to aspire to.

If you have ever seen the pre broadcast video--sometimes the live feeds don't clip it out--you would see how hard they work at it to get it right. Vic does a lot of good ad-libbing on his basic pre game script. Interesting to watch.

The TSN crew is as good as I've seen and heard in any sport. They work well together and Russ is a jewel. So don't complain, we could be stuck with a Neanderthal like Don Cherry.

Agreed - but an experienced curling man like yourself shouldn't forget about Don Wittman & Don Duguid. They were tremendous - although it should be stated they never had to do twice daily draws, some awful round-robin games.
In their time - Duguid & Witt only did semi-finals Brier finals and the odd world final.

Don't know if The Dons would have had the stamina to broadcsst every afternoon and evening draw?

Vic has a unique template whereby TSN permits him to repeat about 40% identical content in all broadcasts. Wittman seldom asked Duguid banal questions which is now Vic's #1 job.

In those days the #2 crew would have been Steve Armitage & Hersh Lerner!

My recollection was that Don Duguid was horrid when he was doing curling commentary for NBC during the Olympics a couple of cycles back. I was throwing socks at the TV. Maybe he was past his expiration date at that time. He didn't seem to be very aware about how much the game had changed since the time he played.

It's obvious that there lots of Curling Fans that like the current TSN and Sports Net broadcast announcers and even some still enamoured by some of the old retired veterans announcers. But, there are just as many that don't. So I as a curling fan, like many others would like less announcer chatter, less announcer analysis and less announcer “learning the game” routine.

I can push the mute button and I do, but I miss out on one of the most important part of curling of hearing the curlers in-house conversations, the screams and hollering for more or less sweeping and the sound of the rocks colliding. I like the curling sounds and atmosphere in the rink! I turn on the TV to watch and listen to the sounds of curling, not the sounds of announcers!

So, I don't suggest anyone should have to listen and watch my presentation style of the game of Curling nor should I be required to watch and listen to the “chatter lovers” style.

So, TSN and Sports Net, how about one of your duplicate channels carry only curling rink sounds, no announcer chatter. I would even accept full sound for all the advertising but once the cameras are on, only curling rink sounds would be available.

easy - just don't watch it all then. Simple.
I love the game, love watching, the odd little thing will not get in my way of enjoying watching.

Don and Don were, at best, horrid. But it was all we had and knew.
TSN has the BEST commentators right now. Sportsnet leaves a lot to be desired.

Boy... we all have too much time on our hands, don't we?

I get tired of Vic playing dumb once in a while, but I get that he's doing it for the non-playing viewing audience. And he's good at keeping the program rolling.

Russ is probably the best "colour" guy in curling right now. He's not perfect, but his knowledge of the game is second to none, and his ability to explain things improves every season. Even though I think he goes on tangents sometimes about shots he wants to call.

Cheryl is improving her skills on the mic and I think she fits in with Russ and Vic very well. And when she says something, it's usually spot on.

We can argue about the rest of the announcers as much as we want. I'm starting to warm up to Kevin Martin these days as he gets more comfortable behind the mic.

And it's good to see that one of the constants in curling, Manitoba Legend blowing Team Jones' horn, is continuing. I'd be surprised Jones would bother being behind the camera when the time comes. She's a lawyer and by all accounts is doing quite well... why would you want to take a paycut and have to travel all over the place?

Jill Officer I can see moving into the role, as that is her education and background (communications and journalism/broadcasting) and she's worked in the field.
