Since three quarters of the team is the same I think they do get to keep their spot to Summerside.

Does Gushue have to get a medal at Worlds to ensure a berth here?

No, he is so far ahead on points he will get a berth to Ottawa regardless. You can see the latest update to the Ottawa slots in an earlier post I did after the Brier.

It's all about the money, money, money. More teams equals more draws equals more tv revenue, more ticket sales, more food and beverage sales etc etc. And why not? I'm fine with even going to 10 teams. Remember for the men last time it was the last team that qualified from the pretrials that won the gold for Canada.

I know this is a bit older, but McEwan was not able to add any points in Aberdeen, as he finished 3rd there and that result was not better than any of his previous 8.

According to a recent facebook post from team mcewen their bronze medal win at the brier was enough points to earn a trials spot. If that's true then the only race is for the final spot between laycock and morris right?

Remember: Curling Canada fills in the qualification list in the order presented, any duplicate team is replaced by the highest unqualified one year points team but the two year spot at number 5 goes to the highest unqualified two year team. This is my interpretation of how it is stated on their website.

After the Brier it stands like this:

1 - 2015 Canada Cup - Koe
2 - 2016 Brier - Koe replaced by Gushue
3 - 2016 Canada Cup - Carruthers
4 - 2017 Brier - Gushue replaced by Jacobs
5 - CTRS two year total - McEwen
6 - CTRS one year total - Epping
7 - CTRS one year total - Laycock

One year:
1. Gushue 483.528
2. Carruthers 404.461
3. Jacobs 383.493
4. Epping 331.506
5. McEwen 312.789
6. Koe 305.355
7. Laycock 299.038
8. Morris 275.034

Two year:
1. Gushue 1011.17
2. Koe 836.515
3. Carruthers 802.305
4. McEwen 770.710
5. Jacobs 728.622
6. Epping 700.673
7. Laycock 623.050
8. Morris 491.999

Realistically only Morris has a chance of catching somebody for the one year total. McEwen really helped himself up the one year list with his third place finish in the Brier and also extended his lead over Epping on the two year list. McEwen and Morris are the only teams in the running here not already qualified for the Champions Cup. All teams are in the Players. While the non points garnering Elite 10 is going on this week-end McEwen will be in Europe at the Aberdeen spiel looking for more points. Although possible, it is very unlikely a series of results will occur where McEwen does not somehow already qualify (Epping would have to pass him on the two year list and both Laycock and Morris would have to pass him on the one year list.) Epping is probably in as well unless say Morris wins the Players and Laycock wins the Champion's cup. It is really a two horse race between Laycock and Morris for the final automatic berth to Ottawa.

It's really unfortunate that Elite 10 results don't count as Morris did so well there. Anyway rules are rules and I really pray that Morris can overtake Laycock and secure the last spot.

No it was great common sense, A skins format minus the money each end should never get points and with only 10 teams? You need some semblance of consistency when an olympic berth is on the line,

The mens field is shaping up to be super strong. Alot like the 2014 one, where 7 of 8 or all 8 entries have a fairly realistic and plausible chance (not just a fly in the dark) of winning. It should be exciting. I will be rooting hard for Gushue of course but whoever wins Canada should have a great rep.

Field is nine this time. If the non-qualifier from morris / Laycock and Menard get out of Summerside than all nine teams would have a good shot in Ottawa.

Well almost. Despite that he has won a Brier I honestly cant imagine Menard winning the Roar, but I guess crazier things have happened.

With Morris losing the tie-breaker to get into the Player's playoff round Laycock gets the last ticket to Ottawa.

Was pulling for Morris, oh well, they can still get one next season, as it's only the last ticket for this season, wait, can't they still get points at the Champions Cup or Euronics?

how about epping? he's been god awful since letting those leads slip away in the ontario playoffs. barely won matches.

i still get the feeling this team will be breaking apart by this time next year but curious if they managed to hang on to their spot

ChampionsCup does not counting as CTRS this year. Even if they entered the Euro tourney it does not have a high enough SFM to make a difference.

Team Edin like never stops, they are playing like in 3 days in Europe and the week after back in Canada, do they ever take a week off, are they the only full timers on the men's tour, anyhow congrats to them on their win today, was pulling for McEwen, too bad Mike missed his last shot, teams look to be tired now as there have been a lot of misses this week.

The 7 men's teams for the ROTR have been finalized. They are also the same 7 teams that lead the 2016-17 CTRS. The first number below is the Olympic seed, and the bracketed number is the 2016-17 standing.

1 (6) Koe
2 (1) Gushue
3 (2) Carruthers
4 (3) Jacobs
5 (4) McEwen
6 (5) Epping
7 (7) Laycock

Since the direct berths into the pre-trials were all won by teams that qualified directly to the ROTR, the first 10 teams are the top 10 teams on the 2016-17 CTRS, not already in the trials.

Before adjustments, they are:
1. Morris
2. Bottcher
3. Thomas
4. Howard
5. Dunstone
6. Gunnlaugson
7. Balsdon
8. Casey
9. Korte
10 Deruelle

Dunstone left his team to join Laycock. Jason Gunnlaugson has left his team, and take over Dunstone's team, so #5 actually becomes Dunstone. Pat Simmons has taken over Jason's team, so #6 is now Simmons.

Spots 11 & 12 go to two year CTRS points leaders, not already qualified. They are:
1. Lyburn
2. Bice

Unless teams reorganize, the 12 teams at pre-trials should be:

1. Morris
2. Bottcher
3. Thomas
4. Howard
5. Gunnlaugson
6. Simmons
7. Balsdon
8. Casey
9. Korte
10 Deruelle
11. Lyburn
12. Bice
