Russian Olympic Ban?

I admittedly haven't looked for long, but with the prospect of Russian athlete's being banned from the Olympics has anyone seen anything from the WCF about how they might distribute the spots in Mixed and Women's?

I would assume (hope) that for the Mixed, because there's no qualification event, that they would simply move down the list and GB get the final spot.(YES!)

For the Women's it's a bit more complicated with the qualification event starting before the decision is made (apparently tomorrow evening Switzerland time).

Would they give Germany the spot and pull them out of the qualification event, or add a third qualification spot to the event?!

Theoretically....however...

1. How they prove they are "clean" is a legitimate question...tests from the Russian lab certainly aren't gonna do it.

2. Teams can't compete as "Team Russia"...so...not sure how that would work

3. Russian Government has threatened to force their athletes to boycott the games if this happened...so...they may not be able to play anyhow.

This is going to get very ugly very soon.

The McLaren Report (on Russian doping) had listed curling as one of the sports where there were inconsistencies in Russian testing/sampling/etc. So although Track and weightlifting were the highlighted ones, curling was also listed.

im just stunned. i never thought they'd ban the entire russian team. putin wont let them compete under anneutral flag. what does this mean for the women?. if russia isnt there will they just let 3 teams from the qualifying event in?

Ekaterina Galkina (former Russian lead) had 2 positive tests for anabolics in 2014, and results were buried. You can google the documents online though.
And was it last year when the mens’ Russian team showed up for worlds, then all went home citing “illness” and an entirely different team was flown in to compete? They should all be banned.

Supposedly, if any Russian athletes want to compete, they would have to provide a legitimate history of clean drug tests AND be willing to compete under a neutral flag, not representing their country.

The big question is what will happen should the Russian women not attend? I would imagine they'd just take three from the qualifying event rather than two.

The year the Russians switched teams at the last moment was when meldonium was added to the banned list. Most likely they still tested positive for it and would have failed at Worlds.

I don’t necessarily agree with all of your sentiments, but I very much appreciate your turn of phrase!
