Mark Nichols wins StuSells Toronto Tankard

Mark Nichols (St. John's, NL) wins the StuSells Toronto Tankard, defeating John Epping (Toronto, ON) 5-4 at the High Park Club in Toronto, Ontario. Nichols skipping Team Gushue with Brad out with a hip injury added Adam Spencer at third along with Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker on the front end take home the $15,000CDN first place cheque along with 55.016 world ranking points, while Epping receives $10,000CDN and 43.227 world ranking points for their second place finish.

Starting with hammer, Nichols scored 1 in the first end, then forced Epping to a single in the second end but conceded the game to Nichols by a score of 1-1. After a blank end, Nichols scored 2 in the fourth end to extend the lead to 3-1, then Epping responded in the fifth end scoring 2. Nichols scored a single in the sixth end, then forced Epping to a single in the seventh end. Nichols scored a single in the eighth end for the 5-4 win.

In the semifinals, Nichols defeated Chang-Min Kim (Uiseong, Korea) 6-2 and Epping defeated Rasmus Stjerne (Hvidovre, Denmark) 7-3. Kim and Stjerne earned $5,000CDN and 33.403 ranking points for their semifinal finishes. In the quarterfinals, Nichols defeated Mark Bice (Sarnia, ON) 7-2, Epping defeated Glenn Howard (Penetanguishene, ON) 9-5, while Kim defeated Brad Jacobs (Sault Ste Marie, ON) 4-3 and Stjerne defeated Greg Balsdon (Kingston, ON) 6-3. Balsdon, Bice, Jacobs and Howard earned $3,500CDN along with 23.578 ranking points for their quarterfinal finishes.

Nichols went 3-0 in the 24 team triple knockout qualifying round advancing through the A event. In their opening game, Nichols defeated Michael Brunner (Gstaad, Switzerland) 6-2, then won against Dayna Deruelle (Brampton , ON) 10-6, then won again versus Jacobs 7-3 in their final qualifying round match.
