 OMAHA, Neb - Jamie Sinclair and the USA women made an opening statement that they are here to contend with a 9-5 win over Korea to kick off the Curling World Cup at Ralston Arena. Sinclair and the American women jumped out to a fast start against Korea's Minji Kim as they stole points in the opening two ends to build a 3-0 lead. Korea was able to take advantage of a heavy steal out of Sinclair's hand in the third end to draw into the eight-foot for three points. Sinclair and teammates Sarah Anderson (Minneapolis, Minn.), Taylor Anderson (Minneapolis, Minn.), and Monica Walker (St. Paul, Minn.) broke the tie in the fourth end with a draw for two points. The U.S. ladies played a strong fifth end and forced Korea to draw for a single point. Team USA pounced on an opportunity for four points in the sixth end to put the game out of reach. Korea would concede after scoring just a single point in the seventh end. "I think it took us a little bit to get a good feel for the ice. We were a little bit rushed coming into the game with the new time format," Walker said about the structured thinking time for the first half (four minutes) and second half (four minutes + fifteen seconds) at this competition. "I think we felt the pressure so once we settled in with how that felt, we were able to feel out the ice and play better." Up next, USA's Tabitha Peterson and Joe Polo take to the ice in mixed doubles competition against Norway. John Shuster and the U.S. men will play China at 9 tonight. Sunday, Dec. 9: 8:30 a.m., mixed doubles final 12 p.m., women?s final 4 p.m., men?s final Format: Games will be eight ends as standard and, in each discipline, there will be two groups of four. Teams will play a double round robin, with the teams finishing top of their groups moving into finals that will decide the winners. In a move away from other international curling championships, there will be no extra ends to decide tied games. Instead, there will be a one stone shoot-out, for each team, with the team closest to the button winning the game. Expanding on that idea, teams will be handed three points for a win in eight ends and two points if they win after a shoot-out. The team that loses the shoot-out gets a single point and a losing team after eight ends gets no points. In addition, the winning team, in each discipline, will get ten points and the runner-up five points. These Curling World Cup Points are accumulated in each discipline throughout the first three legs and credited to the Member Associations, to establish the Curling World Cup ranking. |
