Olympic Bronze for Switzerland's De Cruz

Switzerland's Peter De Cruz defeated Canada 7-5 to win the Olympic Bronze Medal.

Gangneung, Republic of Korea - Switzerland beat Canada by 7-5 to win the Olympic bronze medals in Friday afternoon's men's bronze medal game at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018.

Switzerland - skip and second player Peter de Cruz, fourth player Benoit Schwarz, third player Claudio Paetz and lead Valentin Tanner, supported by alternate Dominik Maerki and coach Claudio Pescia - led from the second end when, after Canada blanked the first end, their skip Kevin Koe rubbed his last draw stone off a Swiss stone already lying in the house, to open the scoring by giving Switzerland a steal of one point.

In the third end, Koe was too long with his final stone at the back of the house, handing Switzerland another single point steal and a 2-0 lead.

Canada - skip Koe, third player Marc Kennedy, second Brent Laing, and lead Ben Hebert, supported by alternate Scott Pfeifer and coach John Dunn - got themselves on to the scoreboard in the fourth end, when they brought their final stone in off a wing-guard, knocking out a Swiss stone and scoring two points to level the score at 2-2.

However, after a missed double take-out attempt by Canada in the fifth end, Switzerland's fourth player Benoit Schwarz drew his last stone into the house for two more points and a half-time 4-2 lead.

In the sixth end, Canada's Koe could only score one point when he was not able to shift a Swiss stone sitting in the middle of a cluster round the button. In the seventh end, Schwarz had another draw for two points to give Switzerland a 6-3 lead.

Canada narrowed this to 6-5 in the eighth end when Koe was successful with a double take-out, but Switzerland restored a two-point lead in the ninth end when Schwarz took out two Canadian stones for the single point.

Canada ran out of stones in the tenth end to give Switzerland their first men's Olympic medal since another bronze medal in 2010.

This result now leaves just Saturday's gold medal final between Sweden and United States to conclude the 2018 men's team programme. The men's gold medal game will be played tomorrow (Saturday 24 February) at 15:35 KST. After that, the Swiss men will join these two teams on the podium.
