China's Bingyu Wang Puts Canada On the Ropes

China's Bingyu Wang defeated Rachel Homan 7-5 meaning Canada must win 3 straight games to make playoffs.

Gangneung, Republic of Korea - After going undefeated in last year's World Championships in China, Canada's Rachel Homan was seen as the Gold-medal favourite at the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea but the week has been anything for the team from Ottawa.

A fourth loss in session 10 to China's Bingyu Wang drops Canada to 3-4 and puts them on the verge of elimination. The good news for Canada is that they still control their own destiny and need 3 wins to reach the playoffs and 2 more to claim the Gold medal.

After a blank to start, the hammer advantage disappeared for Homan in the second end when Homan's hit rubbed a guard and China stole 2 points for the early lead. Homan was forced to draw for a single in the third end when Wang made a great hit and roll to save the end. Homan got their own gift in return in the 4th end when Wang was light for a steal of 2, but the lead was short-lived when China bounced back to score 3 in the fifth end into the break.

Eventually, in the tenth end, the Chinese team swept home their skip Wang's last stone to score one point and seal a 7-5 victory.

Canada faces Great Britain Wednesday morning in Korea (7pm ET Tuesday) in a must-win game that will bring Great Britain back into a tiebreaker position, then must win against Victoria Moiseeva's Olympic Athletes from Russia team Wednesday evening (6am ET) to get to 5-4.

With a 9-6 win over the United States in Tuesday afternoon's tenth session of women's round-robin play at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018, Korea became the first women's team to qualify for the semi-finals and the only Korean team to do so in Olympic history.

In other games in this session, Great Britain beat Japan by 8-6 and China were 7-5 winners over Canada. Four teams sat out this particular action – Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland and the Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR) team.

The game between the United States and Korea was played out in front of a packed enthusiastic home crowd, and it was the United States who started stronger, scoring two points in the first end.

But in the fifth end, Korean skip EunJung Kim first played a draw to lie three shot stones and made a big hit and roll to remove an American stone with her second shot to set up a steal of four points to take a 6-3 lead into the break. After this, United States could not find a way back and eventually ran out of stones in the tenth end, with Korea winning 9-6.

Japan started their game against Great Britain in joint second place while the British were looking for another win to help their semi-final hopes.

The teams went into the break tied at 3-3 but Britain stole three points in the sixth end when a tap-back by Japan's skip Satsuki Fujisawa did not work out. Fujisawa played a hit and stay to score two points in the seventh end to reduce the British lead to 6-5, but Britain's skip Eve Muirhead stayed in control in the second half of the game to win by 8-6.

As well as sealing Korea's historic place in the semi-finals, on six wins and one loss, with two games left to play, these results leave Sweden - who sat out the session - in clear second place, on five wins and two losses, with two games still to play.

Behind these two sit Great Britain and Japan in joint third place - each on five wins and three losses, but with one game left to play. China and United States both have four wins and four losses, with one game left to play, in joint fifth place. Canada sit in seventh place, on three wins and four losses, but with two games left to play.

These three teams - China, United States and Canada - can still force their way into semi-final contention, through a combination of winning their own games and having other results go their way.

The women's round-robin continues tomorrow (Wednesday 21 February) morning, with the session 11 at 09:05 Korean Standard Time (KST).

Women session ten results: Canada 5-7 China; United States 6-9 Korea; Great Britain 8-6 Japan.

Standings after women session ten (win-loss):

Korea 6-1 Q
Sweden 5-2
Great Britain 5-3
Japan 5-3
China 4-4
United States 4-4
Canada 3-4
Olympic Athlete from Russia 2-5
Switzerland 2-5
Denmark 1-6

Q = Qualified for semi-finals
