Homan Dominant in Canada's Win Over USA


Gangneung, Republic of Korea - Canada won their first game of the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 women's curling event on Saturday night, with an 11-3 win over the United States in the Gangneung Curling Centre.

Meanwhile, Japan women recorded their fourth win and moved into second place on the table, with leaders Sweden sitting out the session. Japan beat the Olympic Athlete from Russia team 10-5.

Canada's team skipped by Rachel Homan completed their game in seven ends. In the fifth end, Homan made a draw to the four-foot ring. Canada scored three points and took a 7-2 lead into the break. Then, in the seventh end Homan had a hit for four points to take her team's lead to 11-3, at which point the United States conceded the game.

In the seventh end, of their game against the Olympic Athlete from Russia team, Japan's skip Satsuki Fujisawa made a hit that placed three of her stones closest to the button with her last stone. However, her opposite skip, Victoria Moiseeva, held the hammer and attempted to come off a wide stone in the 12-foot ring to score, but was unable to do so, handing Japan a steal of three points and an 8-4 lead. Japan cemented their victory, 10-5, in the ninth end with a score of two points. Moiseeva and her team conceded the match at this stage.

China beat Denmark 10-7 in their game and now sit in joint fourth place with Great Britain, with three wins and two losses. China began their game with a four-point opening end, a deficit Denmark clawed back from to go into the half-time break, one point up 6-5.

In the seventh end, China's skip Bingyu Wang had to draw her last stone round a guard, and a protected Danish counting stone to take one point from the end and level the scores at 6-6. Then, in the ninth end Wang drew again, this time for four points and the win, at 10-7.

In the game between Korea and Great Britain, the score changed hands on four occasions. Great Britain went ahead on the scoreboard in the seventh end when Korea skip EunJung Kim was heavy with her draw, allowing Muirhead's team to take a 4-2 lead. Then, in the eighth end Kim made a hit for two points to level the scores at 4-4.

Korea then stole two points in the ninth end when Muirhead wrecked on a guard as she attempted to draw to the house. Korea completed the game with another single point steal in the tenth end to win 7-4. Korea now sits in third place in the standings.
