Heath McCormick wins ASHAM U.S. Open of Curling
Heath McCormick (Blaine, Minnesota) wins the ASHAM US Open of Curling, defeating Adam Casey (Regina, Saskatchewan) 6-5 at the Four Seasons Curling Club in Blaine, Minnesota, United States. McCormick with Christopher Plys at third, Korey Dropkin and Thomas Howell on the front end take home the $6,935CDN first place cheque along with 29.261 world ranking points, while Casey receives $4,413CDN and 22.991 world ranking points for their second place finish. Casey opened the scoring stealing 1 in the first end, then forced McCormick to a single in the second end. Casey scored a single in the third end, McCormick responded in the fourth end scoring 2 to take a 3-2 lead. then added a steal in the fifth end. Casey scored 2 in the sixth end. then added a steal in the seventh end to take back the lead when McCormick responded in the eighth end scoring 2 for the 6-5 win. In the semifinals, McCormick defeated Greg Persinger (Seattle, Washington) 5-2 and Casey defeated Todd Birr (Blaine, Minnesota) 7-2. Persinger and Birr earned $3,152CDN and 17.765 ranking points for their semifinal finishes. In the quarterfinals, Persinger defeated Colton Flasch (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) 6-4 and Birr defeated Pete Fenson (Bemidji, Minnesota) 5-3. Fenson and Flasch earned $1,891CDN along with 12.540 ranking points for their quarterfinal finishes. McCormick went 3-0 in the 12 team triple knockout qualifying round. In their opening game, McCormick defeated Fenson 8-2, won against Birr 6-1, and defeated Casey 9-2 in the A-Qualifier to advance directly to the semifinals. |
