Jean-Michel Menard wins Finale du Circuit
Jean-Michel Menard (Gatineau, QC) wins the Finale du Circuit, defeating Alek Bedard (Montreal, QC) 7-6 in an extra end at the Aurèle Racine Curling Club in Tracy, Quebec, Canada. Menard with Martin Crete at third, Steven Munroe and Philippe Menard on the front end take home the $4,000CDN first place cheque along with 17.228 world ranking points, while Bedard receives $2,000CDN and 13.537 world ranking points for their second place finish. Starting with hammer, Menard scored 1 in the first end, then added a steal of 2 in the second end. After Bedard scored a single in the third end, Menard responded in the fourth end scoring 2 to extend then lead to 5-1. Bedard scored 2 in the fifth end, then added a steal in the sixth end to close the deficit to one, then Menard scored a single in the seventh end and Bedard added two in the eighth end to send the game to an extra end. Menard scored a single in the extra end for the 7-6 win. In the semifinals, Menard defeated Martin Ferland (Levis, QC) 5-3 and Bedard defeated Jean-Sebastien Roy (Chicoutimi, QC) 2-1. Roy and Ferland earned $1,000CDN and 10.460 ranking points for their semifinal finishes. In the quarterfinals, Menard defeated Vincent Bourget (Buckingham, QC) 4-2, Bedard defeated Yannick Martel (Saguenay, QC) 9-1, while Roy defeated Guy Hemmings (Sorel-Tracy, QC) 8-4 and Ferland defeated Francois Gagne (Montreal, QC) 4-3. Hemmings, Martel, Bourget and Gagne earned $600CDN along with 7.384 ranking points for their quarterfinal finishes. Menard went 3-1 in the 16 team triple knockout qualifying round. In their opening game, Menard defeated Geoff Reid (Baie d'Urfe, QC) 7-2, losing their next game to Bourget 6-2, then responded with a 8-3 win over Michael Fournier (Montreal, QC). Menard won against Ferland 5-3 in the B-Qualifier to advance to the playoff round. |
