Schmirler Charity Curling Classic Brings the Best of Canada and the World to Regina
Source:  Schmirler Classic Release

(Sep 24, 2009) -- Regina, SK – The Schmirler Charity Curling Classic presented by Bank of America will feature some of the best women's curling teams in the world competing for an excellent purse from September 25 to 28 at the Caledonian Curling Club.

This year's field promises exciting competition with teams who have already been confirmed as their country's Olympic representatives - China (Wang - 2009 World Champion), United States (Debbie McCormick), Russia (Privivkova) and Japan (Meguro). Teams from Canada, many preparing for the upcoming Canadian Curling Trials which will determine Canada's curling representative to the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, include Shannon Kleibrink (AB), Stefanie Lawton (SK), Kelly Scott (BC), Sherry Anderson (SK), Sherry Middaugh (ON) and many others of Canada's best. Among the teams competing, most teams have players who are Olympic champions or participants, Women's and Junior Women's World, Canadian and Provincial champions.

"Last year's change in format and timing for the Schmirler Charity Curling Classic proved to be a great move for the event as it draws the best teams to come out and play and it has continued to ensure that this event is a must see for curling fans in Regina and Saskatchewan," said Susan Lang, Chair of the organizing committee.

"Bank of America, through its CUETS Financial business, is proud to once again be the title sponsor of this world class event," said Doug Scott, Senior Vice President, Partnership Management and Sales. "The Schmirler Charity Curling Classic is considered one of the premiere events among women curlers, while at the same time raising important fundraising for the Dr. Sandra Schmirler Scholarship at the University of Regina."

The Classic Committee and Bank of America are also very pleased to contribute extra funds to the Dr. Sandra Schmirler Scholarship at the University of Regina as charity of choice for the event. The Scholarship was presented with a donation of $7,500 at the media conference today. This amount represents the funds raised by the event and a generous donation direct from Bank of America. "Bank of America is proud to be associated with the legacy of such a talented, dedicated and respected individual," Scott said.

Competition in the 30-team round robin draw begins at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, September 25. The first place team from each pool, plus the next top three finishers will advance to the eight-team championship straight knockout draw. The final draw takes place Monday, September 28 at 4:30 p.m.

Event passes are $25, daily passes are $10 and the evening draws are $5. There is no charge for children 12 and under. Passes and tickets are available at the Callie Club and are on sale now.
