(Nov 27, 2008) -- The World’s best women curlers have arrived in Pictou County this week, and the biggest curling event in Atlantic Canada is just about underway.
The Sobeys Slam, a Grand Slam of Curling Event, kicks off with a Pro-Am Wednesday evening, with funds raised going to the Pictou County YMCA Strong Kids Campaign. This event gets started at 8pm, and is open to the public, free of charge.
Games begin Thursday morning at 8:30, with matches including Jennifer Jones taking on regional qualifier Nancy McConnery, and Heather Rankin facing Jill Mouzar. In the 12:00 draw, top seeded Shannon Kleibrink will face the other regional qualifier Donna Butler, as well Bingyu Wang and defending champion Sherry Middaugh will both see their first action. At 4pm and 7:30pm, teams will be paying in their second games, with match-ups in the triple knockout event determined by the results from 8:30 and 12:00.
The 7:30pm draw on Thursday will also include the opening ceremonies at 7:00pm.
Friday morning the action will continue at John Brother MacDonald Stadium, while the Bluenose Curling Club will play host to the School of Rock, which will see a number of the pro curlers working with Juniors from around the region to help with skills development and strategy, as well as sessions on nutrition and fitness.

On Sunday, the event reverts to a single-knockout playoff, with the quarter-finals at 8am, semi-finals at 11:30, and the championship game at 3:00. Tickets can still be purchased at the door at both the Bluenose Curling Club and John Brother MacDonald Stadium. |
